Peter Sears, J.D., Chairman of the Board

Peter recently joined Quaker BioVentures to assist in the establishment of the BioAdvance Venture Fund, a fund dedicated to the support of early stage biomedical companies in Pennsylvania. In addition to Quaker, he is currently a director of four biotechnology companies: Avant Immunotherapeutics (Needham, Mass.), Immune Control, Inc. (West Conshohocken, Pa.), Protez Pharmaceuticals (Malvern, Pa.), and Vybion, Inc. (Ithaca, N.Y.). Peter began his career with Smith, Kline and French (now GlaxoSmithKline) in 1963 as an attorney in the company's Law Department. In 1973, he moved into international management as General Manager, Japan and Korea, and later Vice President, Canada and Asia Pacific for the company's Consumer Products Division. Peter then became Vice President, Corporate Development and served in that role for seven years before starting S.R. One, the company's strategic venture capital fund. During his 14-year tenure with S.R. One, he established the fund as a leading venture capital player worldwide, investing approximately $260 million into more than 90 companies, delivering significant value to both portfolio companies and SmithKline. Peter holds a J.D. degree from Harvard Law School and since 1997 has been on the faculty of the Johnson School of Management, Cornell University.

Sukwoo (Jeffrey) Oh, J.D., Executive Vice President, Business Operations and co-founder

Jeff was formerly a Managing Director of Roberts Mitani, LLC, and has worked extensively with pharmaceutical companies, advising on commercial development, long-term strategies, corporate restructuring, and addressing corporate financial matters. He also advised several U.S. biotech companies on strategic corporate alliances and raising capital from corporate partners, financial companies, and selected non-healthcare technology companies. Prior to joining Roberts Mitani, Jeff practiced corporate law with Bryan, Levitin & Bab, and was a general counsel to Exim America, Co., Smart Saver, Co., and Pulmuwon USA, Inc. Jeff received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Accounting from California State University, Northridge and his J.D. degree from University of Notre Dame Law School.

Edward Kiel, J.D.

Ed is a partner in the litigation department of Cole, Schotz, Meisel, Forman & Leonard, P.A., one of New Jersey's largest law firms. He is an experienced litigator practicing primarily in the areas of commercial and corporate litigation. Ed has been certified by the Supreme Court of New Jersey as a Civil Trial Attorney, having taken an extensive array of matters to trial and received the highest rating (AV) for his professionalism and the quality of his legal work from Martindale-Hubbell, the premier directory of legal professionals. He has argued numerous cases before the Appellate Division and the New Jersey Supreme Court, resulting in a number of reported decisions. He is also a member of the Justice Morris Pashman American Inn of Court and serves as an attorney member of the District IIB Fee Arbitration Committee. Ed also represents various religious and charitable institutions, and is an elder of his church. Ed earned his B.A. and B.S. in electrical engineering from Rutgers University and received his J.D. from the University of Notre Dame Law School.

David C. U'Prichard, Ph.D.

David is a consultant with a long history of supporting and advancing innovative R&D programs within both life sciences companies and Big Pharma. Currently, David is Venture Partner at private equity providers Red Abbey Venture Partners (Baltimore), and previously served as Venture Partner at Care Capital, LLC (Princeton) and Apax Partners Ltd. (London). He is also President of Druid Consulting LLC. David has held in numerous leadership and board positions in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry. From 1999 to 2003, David was CEO and Board member of 3-Dimensional Pharmaceuticals, Inc. During his tenure, 3DP completed its IPO and secured large collaborations with Bristol-Myers Squibb, and with Johnson & Johnson that ultimately acquired 3DP in March 2003. From 1997 to 1999, David served as Chairman of R&D at SmithKline Beecham; and, from 1986 to 1997, worked for ICI/Zeneca, ultimately as Executive Vice President and International Research Director. Previously, he was instrumental in the launch of Nova Pharmaceuticals in 1983. Before his business career, David was an Associate Professor of Pharmacology and Neurobiology at Northwestern University Medical School and a postdoctoral fellow at Johns Hopkins University. He received his Ph.D. in Pharmacology from the University of Kansas, and his B.S. in Pharmacology with first-class honors from the University of Glasgow, Scotland. David currently sits on the boards of Invitrogen Corp., Cyclacel, Inc. (Chairman), CoGenesys, Inc., Oxagen, Ltd. (Chairman), and SR Pharma, PLC.

Jerry M. Kokoshka, Ph.D., M.B.A., Observer

Jerry has served as Associate Director at Columbia University Science & Technology Ventures since October 2001. He obtained his Ph.D. in Phamacology from University of Utah and received his M.B.A. from Cornell University. After his initial career in finance as partner in a bank brokerage firm, he completed a Ph.D. in pharmacology. His graduate and postgraduate research in oncology and neuropharmacology led to the characterization of novel chemotherapeutic agents and the discovery of endogenous neuroprotective effectors in the mammalian central nervous system. At Columbia, Dr. Kokoshka focuses on promoting interdisciplinary collaborations and strives to identify complementary technologies that could be packaged for the industry.
